Move Moss & Algae out this Autumn
Algae and Moss can be lurking around your greenhouse during this time of year due to the moist and humid environment. The end of the Summer still brings the odd hot day just with a little more rain thrown in the mix. Having algae and moss in the greenhouse present problems, not only as unsightly growths on soil surfaces and roots, but can be serious safety hazards. Having an abundance of Algae and Moss in the greenhouse also encourages the presence of fungus gnats and other pests that can infest your plants and ruin your entire crop.
Algae on Walkways:
For heavy infestation, spray or swab. Let stand for an hour or more. Brush and wash away dead algae. Soak area again with PHYSAN 20 solution. Do not rinse. This product will inhibit the growth of algae on walkways. Allow to dry on surface and repeat application when algae growth returns
Use 1.5 tablespoons of Physan 20 solution per 3.7 Litres of water.
Mildewstat - Table Tops & Floors:

Trust your tools?
Cutting and pruning tools are a prime suspect when it comes to controlling the spread of infectious diseases around the garden. When was the last time you cleaned or disinfected them? Tools that are left unchecked risk contaminating all plants they come into contact with, so you must always be ready and prepared.
Keep a solution of Physan20 handy to dunk your tools in to ensure no evil can be committed from those secateurs or hedge loppers.
Keeping your tools in check and sterilised is a sure shot method to keep infections at bay and greatly mitigate the spread of disease.
For a killer tool steriliser:
Use 1 teaspoon of Physan 20 in 0.9 litres of water.
Be responsible with the products you use and avoid harmful bleaches & nasty chemicals. Why use a product that could be harmful to you, your plants or your loved ones.
Autumn still brings in the hearty cold bite now and again. These cold snaps are not ideal for your orchids and can bring on a few fungal diseases such as Erwinia, Crown/Root Rot, and leaf Blights.
Keeping prepared by preventatively spraying your orchids with Physan 20 will keep them healthy and disease free during the colder months.
Mix 1 teaspoon of Physan 20 to 1.8 litres of water and apply as a foliar spray fortnightly during Colder seasons.
To treat Orchid Rot (Erwinia):
Mix 1 Tablespoon of Physan 20 concentrate with 3.7 Litres of water in a bucket. Remove plant from potting medium and soak entire plant for 10 – 12 minutes. Cut away all rot with a treated tool.
(You can mix 1 teaspoon of Physan 20 concentrate in 0.9 Litres of water for a tool disinfecting solution)
Soak plant wounds again for another 10 minutes and repot in Physan 20 soaked compost.
For Orchid maintenance:
Mix 2 teaspoons of Physan 20 in 3.7 Litres of water. Spray anytime disease other than rot is evident. Spray once per month as preventative maintenance and be sure to soak potting medium when fungus is evident.
To treat botrytis:
Mix 1 teaspoon of Physan 20 per 11.3 Litres of water. During cool damp weather spray plants, flowers and under benches at first sign of the spotting on flowers. Normally weekly spraying will greatly reduce or eliminate the botrytis spotting.
Other Orchid diseases may require different mix ratios and directions, so check the Physan 20 bottle booklet for more treatments and instructions!
Leaf spots are a common disease that affect the foliage of plants and shade trees, especially throughout the colder Autumn and Winter seasons. Most leaf spots are caused by Fungi, with some others caused by bacteria. Once the disease is in the leaf, it will continue to grow until the leaf tissue is destroyed with spots varying in size from pinheads to spots that take up the entire leaf.
There is no known cure for leaf spot so your best bet to combat this disease is through maintenance foliar spraying. This will prevent the spores from germinating and spreading. If your are not preventatively spraying then spray a Physan 20 solution at the first sign that symptoms start appearing.
Treating Trees, Lawn & Turfgrass from Leaf Blights and Leaf Spots (Also applies for Flowering dogwood (cornus florida):
Mix 2 tablespoons of Physan 20 in 11.3 Litres of water. Spray 4 times – when flower buds begin to open; as soon as flower bracts have fallen; 4 weeks later; and after flower buds are well formed. If possible, spray just before rainy periods.
Treating Hawthorn (crataegus) - Leaf Blights:
Mix 2 tablespoons of Physan 20 in 11.3 Litres of water. After a very wet Spring, small reddish brown spots appear on the upper surfaces of leaves. When spots are numerous, leaves start dropping. Make 3 spray application: First, as soon as the leaves emerge from the buds; then when leaves are half grown; and again when fully grown.
Treating Begonias, ferns and Gesneria (corytholoma, isoloma, allopiectus, episcia & trichosporum) from Bud Rot, Gray Mold, Leaf Spots and Shoot Rot:
Mix 1 teaspoon of Physan 20 in 3.7 Litres of water. Use during all phases of culture. Remove all plants refuse or dead leaves. Garden clean up is essential in disease control. Spray Physan 20 solution before the buds open. Then spray again when blossom petals have fallen. Spray a third time when ¾ of the blossom petals have fallen. Spray again 2 weeks after petal fall.
Treating Cacti from Bacterial Leaf spot, Root Rot and Top Rot:
Mix 2 tablespoons of Physan20 in 11.3 Litres of water. For rotting of underground parts by fungi and bacterial leaf spot or top rot, sterilize seeds and disease-free cuttings by dipping in Physan 20 solution for 5 minutes before planting. Spray at 10 – 14 day intervals.
Prevent Leaf Spots and Fungal Rot Now!
Even though summer carries warmth and better times, it can also bring humidity and sun showers which can be a nasty bearer of diseases and fungal infections.
Several Rose diseases Physan 20 is effective against:
Anthracnose, Black Spot, Botrytis, Brown Canker, Downy Mildew, Leaf Blights, Leaf spots, Powdery Mildew, Rust, Stem Gall
BROWN CANKER:
Rose/Brown canker aka Coniothyrium spp is a common fungal infection that affects the canes of rose plants where if left untreated, can decimate your rose bush eventually killing it. Rose cankers often appear as black/brown blotches on the canes of rose bushes. It is a very infectious disease and can spread easily through contact with cutting shears or secateurs that haven’t been sanitized when pruning multiple bushes. That is why it is common to first see signs of Rose Canker shortly after a recent pruning. Canker is most active during the cold winter months, so it is important to have a good spraying program with a broad range fungicide as preventative maintenance
TREATMENT:
Diseased canes should be pruned back to sound, healthy wood in the spring prior to budbreak. Make sure to use sharp, clean equipment to maximize healing. Equipment can be disinfected with a solution of Physan 20.
Use Regular spraying of Physan 20. Application should begin in early Spring as soon as new growth starts and should be made often enough to provide protection throughout the rainy periods and to keep the new growth covered. On the average, an application once a week will be needed from early Spring until plants are dormant.
For Spraying Solution - Use 2 teaspoons of PHYSAN 20 in 3.7 Litres of water
For Tool Disinfection Solution - Use 1 teaspoon of PHYSAN 20 in 900ml of water
Black Spot is one of the most common and persistent Rose diseases. Symptoms appear on the leaves as circular, black spots that are often surrounded by yellow halos. Leaves can start yellowing and at times can turn completely and drop prematurely. Symptoms may also develop on canes and appear as purple-red blotches that blacken with age and develop a gnarled blistering appearance. Black spot is usually most severe in the wet winter weather.
Treatment:
Black spot can be controlled by following a good sanitation program such as removing infected leaves as soon as they appear and not letting leaf residue/debri linger in the Autumn. Diseased canes must be pruned back to healthy wood in spring prior to budbreak. Having sufficient space between plants ensures good air circulation and can help reduce spread of diseases. Avoiding watering early in the day and top down watering can minimize favourable conditions for disease development. Use Regular spraying. Physan 20 application should begin in early Spring as soon as new growth starts and should be made often enough to provide protection throughout the rainy periods and to keep the new growth covered. On the average, an application once a week will be needed from early Spring until plants are dormant.
Use 2 teaspoons of PHYSAN 20 in 3.7 Litres of water
Powdery Mildew is another common disease of rose recognized worldwide, particularly a nuisance for glasshouse growers. Powdery Mildew is recognized by white, powdery fungal growth on buds, leaves and shoots. Early symptoms appear as reddish patches on leaves that eventuate to the white, powdery appearance and flower buds infected with powdery mildew often fail to open. Unlike other fungi that require moisture to infect, Powdery mildew does not require wet conditions and can appear in relatively dry conditions especially if the air is humid and warm around midsummer or spring.
Treatment:
Powdery Mildew can be controlled by following a good sanitation program such as removing infected leaves as soon as they appear and placed in a bag and discarded accordingly to avoid the spread of fungal spores to surrounding plants. Diseased canes should also be pruned back to healthy wood in the spring, prior to budbreak and ensure there is enough circulation around the plants for healthy airflow minimising favourable conditions for fungal infections.
Spray with Physan 20 solution when symptoms first appear. Make sure to spray the upper and lower surface of leaves and branches until thoroughly wet. You should be spraying with Physan 20 7 to 10 days apart.
Use 2 teaspoons of PHYSAN 20 in 3.7 Litres of water
Rose Rust is a fungal disease that can develop on leaves and any other green parts of the plant, however at its worst symptoms can appear on the entire plant. Small, orange boils develop in early spring on leaf surfaces that gradually enlarge to become more pronounced on the lower surface of the leaf. Mottled areas can also develop on the upper surface of the leaf and develop to boils on the lower surface. Serious infections can result in premature defoliation but this varies depending on the Rose strain and its susceptibility to infection. Rust adores cool temperatures, high moisture, and high humidity and can lie dormant on dead leaves, plant debris, and infected canes.
Treatment:
Rose Rust can be controlled by following a good sanitation program such as removing infected leaves as soon as they appear and placed in a bag and discarded accordingly to avoid the spread of fungal spores to surrounding plants. Diseased canes should also be pruned back to healthy wood in the spring, prior to budbreak and ensure there is enough circulation around the plants for healthy airflow minimising favourable conditions for fungal infections. Stem Gall / Crown gall is a fungal stem disease characterised by galls or swellings on the main stem seen on or slightly below the soil line. Galls are noticeably irregular in shape - they come in all shapes and sizes and can even infect roots and aerial canes of the plant. Young galls can be light green or a soft off-white and darken with age to brown or black becoming hard and woody. The tricky thing with Gall is that infected roses react in different ways; Some appear stunted, others have poor foliage and produce few flowers or flowers of poor quality, and others to put it simply just die. The area where the gall is situated has a significant impact on the symptoms, for example, a single gall at the base of a stem may be more damaging than several galls located on roots or aerial canes. The Gall bacterium infects through open wounds from pruning, cultivating, insect chewing, or heaving in frozen soil. Like many other fungal diseases Gall is also transmitted from using unsanitised cutting tools. Crown gall bacteria can survive without a plant host in the soil or surrounding debris for at least two years making it a troublesome fungal foe indeed.
Treatment:
Stem Gall can be managed by following a good prevention and sanitation program. When transplanting inspect plants prior to planting and make sure they are healthy and disease-free. Avoiding injuries to the roots and crown during planting and cultivating is also helpful. Canes with galls can be pruned back to healthy wood and make sure to use sharp and clean (disinfected) pruning equipment.
Tool Disinfectant Solution : Mix 1 teaspoon of Physan 20 for every 0.9 Litres of water for a killer tool sterilizer.
Autumn is a good time to start the clean-up session with the roses. Putting in work for your roses during Autumn ensures they will make it through the colder conditions and spring back, heartily and healthy next season. Tidying up is the key to good Autumn rose care; removing old blooms and foliage, and a good pruning session for size control – however some people prefer to leave the pruning until winter, but that's up to you and how your plants are looking.
Deadheading roses in early Autumn is a popular pruning pastime for many rose enthusiasts and doing this has proven to bring on a good flurry of flowers around or after Easter. The way to achieve this is to cut the flower back to a puffed bud – about 5 hand spans in length. This should produce blooms in around 7 to 8 weeks.
Colder Autumn and Winter conditions can bring fungal diseases that Roses are quite susceptible to and preventative spraying helps hugely. Fungal diseases are much more easily prevented than cured, and maintenance spraying is essential for a good preventative measure.
Use Physan 20 as a maintenance spray to prevent fungal diseases like Black Spot, Powdery Mildew, Rusts and Stern Gall.
You can also use Physan 20 to disinfect your pruning and cutting tools!
Spraying your Roses:
Mix 1 teaspoon of Physan 20 with 1.8 Litres of water and Spray when symptoms appear. Be sure to spray upper and lower surface of leaves and branches until thoroughly wet. Spray and repeat several times 7 to 10 days apart.
(Other Rose diseases may require different mix ratios and directions, so check the Physan 20 bottle booklet for more treatments and instructions!)
Tool Disinfectant Solution : Mix 1 teaspoon of Physan 20 for every 0.9 Litres of water for a killer tool steriliser.

Rust is a fungal infection that can start rearing its head during Autumn. This nasty disease occurs in both warm and cool temperatures making it a fairly common disease to have all season round. Rust prefers high humidity and heavy rainfall, and can even lie dormant on dead leaves and debris like a silent assassin. Leaving this untreated on your plant can reduce its vigour and will minimise flower production.
Treatment for Rust:
Mix 1 teaspoon of Physan 20 to 1.8 Litres of water and apply several times at 7-10 day intervals when symptoms appear. Be sure to cover the underside and top surfaces of the leaves and branches until thoroughly wet.
Protecting your Plants from Rust is a Must this Autumn!

Leaf spots are a common disease that affect the foliage of plants noticed especially throughout the colder seasons. Most leaf spots are caused by Fungi, some others by bacteria. Once the disease is in the leaf it will continue to grow until the leaf tissue is destroyed, with spots varying in size from pinheads all the way to pots that can take up the entire leaf!
There is no known cure for leaf spot so your best bet to combat this disease is through maintenance foliar spraying. This will prevent the spores from germinating and spreading. If your are not preventatively spraying then spray a Physan 20 solution at the first sign that symptoms start appearing.
